"History
and Adventure on the Oregon Trail" |
"Somewhere between
Platte Bridge and the Sweetwater, we learned later, Jim Bridger, the famous scout and
plainsman, had recently left our trail with an emigrant party bound for the mines by a
route which he had selected northward through the Big Horn Basin and westward through
Bozeman Pass. It seemed that Bridger had chosen this route as being more practical
and offering less danger from Indian attack than that east of the Big Horns. We
heard a good deal of Bridger on our journey - of his ability as a scout and guide, his
integrity and the esteem in which he was held by the government and by private expeditions
which he guided.
We were now gradually reaching a higher level and the oppressive heat of midsummer
was considerably modified by cool breezes from the snow clad mountains. In the late
afternoon of July 12, we came upon Independence Rock. It stands apart from the
nearby mountains - then known as the Rattlesnake Range - as though flung by a giant hand
out upon the plain. "The Great Register of the Desert", Father De Smet
called it."Taken

| Spiritrider Wagontrain
travels the portion of the Oregon Trail that includes Independence Rock. You will
travel the same route that hundreds of wagons passed on the way to Oregon. Imagine
yourself enjoying great meals cooked over an open fire, smell the sage and view wildlife
along the journey. You will hear the words "Wagons Ho" as we depart and
catch a glimpse into a part of history that is still alive and well in Wyoming. Our
professional teamsters and staff dress in authentic period clothing. You will find
out what true western hospitality is all about. So, if you want a glimpse of the
real West and real adventure, we would love to have you join us and the actual wagon wheel
ruts on the original Oregon Trail! |
